DESCRIPTION:
A welcome sight in the garden come spring, dianthus are admired
for their spicy clove-scented flowers and cottage-style appeal.
This low-maintenance plant blooms in nearly every color, from
white to almost black.
Gazania plants can tolerate light frosts but not hard freezes.
They can be grown as perennials only in tropical climates.
Fast growth is encouraged by mixing a balanced organic fertilizer
into the soil before planting. Drench plants with a liquid fertilizer
in late summer to
Support strong blooming in autumn. It can reach
6 to 18 inches (15-46 cm.) in height and about the same in spread
as it trails on the ground. A clumping mound of grass-like foliage
produces Gazania treasure flowers. This easy-to-grow bloom is
tolerant of poor, dry or sandy soil.
When starting gazania seeds indoors in early spring, cover them
well with moist seed starting mix. Gazanias also can be direct -
sown in late spring, after the soil has warmed. In warm climates,
established plants can be propagated by division.
In areas where it is hardy, landscapers use this plant in combination
with other low growers as an ornamental ground cover to edge lawns
or even replace parts of them. Learning how to prune trailing
Gazanias allows the home gardener to use Gazania treasure flowers
in this manner.
